Learning Art Journaling

Art Journaling

What is Art Journaling?

Art journaling is a creative way to journal using images and sometimes words. There are many techniques used in art journaling and there is no one “right” way to do it.

“Art journaling is about the {creative process} of pulling together color, words and images as you wish on a page. Unlike many other forms of art, it is not about the outcome.”

Tammy Garcia

Art Journaling Techniques

There are many art journaling techniques. I’m going to attempt some of these over the next 31 days (I am participating in the 31 Days, which is a blogging challenge in October organized by The Nester. I have chosen to (attempt) to write Monday-Friday during October on the topic of art journaling.)

  • Painting
  • Collage
  • Hand lettering
  • Sewing
  • Stamping
  • Stenciling

How to Create Your Art Journal

  • Notebook or paper. The simplest art journal is a blank notebook and a pen.
  • Pen. My all-time favourite pen is the Uni-Ball Signo retractable gel pen in black micropoint.

Tips

  • Find an example. Find someone who uses an art journaling technique you want to try.
  • Start. Don’t find too many examples because you need to try it.

Tutorials

  • Julie Fei-Fan Balzer has a lot of art journaling resources on her blog.
  • Melissa Esplin teaches lettering with watercolors
  • Digitizing Calligraphy. I’ve taken this Skillshare course and want to practice this more.
  • Kal Barteski’s brush script course. I’ve taken this Studio Calico online course and want to practice her brush script technique more.
  • I recently saw the Art Journal Art Journey book in a bookstore and it’s on my wishlist. I love the mix of photography, typewriter journaling and overall design in this book.

Supplies Used in Art Journaling

  • Simple and cheap: Notepad and pen
  • Ephemera.
  • Glue. Mod podge.
  • Pencil crayons
  • Paint/brushes
  • Stamps
  • Stencils
  • Computer
  • Wacom tablet

Have you ever tried art journaling? Do you have any book or website suggestions about art journaling?

This looks great! Following along with the 31 days project, and I love this idea! I think I’ll go get myself a journal 🙂
