A Year of Story

A Year of Story. Journal prompts for parents. From The Handcrafted Story.

A Year of Story is a set of printable writing prompts to help you tell your stories.

If you were gone today, what stories would you want your child to know? What would you write to your spouse? Imagine what a treasure a journal would be to your family.

Tell your significant stories with the three editions of A Year of Story: Letters to your Child, Letters to your Spouse and Letters to Yourself.

The idea for this project came from my desire to move beyond the photos I scrapbook and tell the stories I want our children to hear. When I hear of parents dying while their kids are young I am reminded what a treasure a journal like this would be.

A Year of Story 2015 Editions

Each of the three editions includes a page to pick a word of the year and a verse of the year plus 16 journal prompts (one per page). So there are enough prompts to write one per month and 4 extra.

  • Letters to my Child. Respond to prompts like: If I could teach you one thing, what I have learned as a parent and 3 things I like about you.
  • Letters to my Spouse. Respond to prompts like: My prayer for you, 3 words to describe you now, and one thing I’ve learned from you.
  • Letters to Myself. Respond to prompts like: 3 things I like about me, the advice I would give myself and if I could teach others one thing.

Since this is a printable that you print, cut and bind yourself, you are free to use all the pages or only the pages that you choose.

Journal Binding

You could wait to bind the book until you have photos to pair with the pages.

You could have the pages wirebound, or punch holes in it and use binder rings, or use a simple clip.

      Hi Lorraine,

Can you tell me what happens when you try to download A Year of Story?

My site was down for awhile because my bandwidth was maxed out (too many people on the site, it’s a good problem!) But that’s fixed now, so the site is back up in case that was the problem for you.

Hope that helps, let me know if you’re still having trouble.

Oh man, there is just so much beauty in these, Anika. I’ve been thinking about the power of words, especially since the memory keeping focus has been on photos (if not fancy scrapbooking products). Thank you for thinking of us child-free people. I’m so excited to go through all of these.

Caylee, so glad you are excited about this project! Yes, I think there are enough child-focused projects, it’s good to focus on our spouse and ourselves, as well. I think it can be easy to get so focused on my role as a parent that my other roles can be forgotten.

This is my first time visiting your site. I actually pinned this journal the other day and now here I am reading your blog post via Kellie’s blog. I LOVE this “small” blog world 🙂 So great. What a cool idea. I’ve been trying to incorporate more journaling in my project life spreads. Photos are wonderful, of course. But I have thousands of them. What a wonderful reminder to remember the words. xoxo

Welcome, Catherine! I agree, photos are fantastic but they only tell part of the story. Thanks for commenting!
