Advent Art Journal

Advent Art Journal, an advent calendar for artists. 25 days of the Christmas story in simple words. From The Handcrafted Story.

This Advent Art Journal is my version of an Advent calendar for artists. It’s 25 days of the Christmas story, told in simple words.

I really like countdown calendars and I especially like Advent calendars. But I don’t like how many Advent calendars involve more chocolate or gifts than our kids need. I want an Advent calendar that will encourage me (and our kids) to reflect on the real reason we celebrate Christmas. So I LOVE making things, I’ve been thinking of how to combine an Advent calendar and art journaling. I had three important guidelines to include in my project:

  1. December is usually a busy month of year so I wanted a simple project I could put together before December.
  2. December usually includes travelling for our family so I wanted something small, that could easily travel with us.
  3. I wanted to make something I could do with my kids.

Advent Art Journal printable

My solution was this DIY Advent Art Journal: 25 Days of the Christmas Story:

  • Print ahead project. Can be printed before December and worked on throughout the month.
  • Small size. There are two sizes of pages (4×6 and 5×7), which are great for travelling.
  • Kid-friendly. Each page includes a part of the Christmas story written in simple words.

The text is the same on both versions, it’s just the page orientation that changes. Here is the horizontal version:

Binding Your Advent Art Journal

You could leave your Advent Art Journal unbound, and prop it up on a desk. Or you could punch holes in it and use binder rings to make a book. Or you could wirebind it, like in the images below.

I am planning to give a wirebound a copy of the horizontal Advent Art Journal to our two-year-old and almost five-year-old to use this December.

I am planning to use a copy of the vertical version, unbound, since I would like to sew, paint, or use other art journaling techniques in it which will be a lot easier to do with the pages unbound.

Between caring for my elderly parents and helping my daughter homeschool her children, I haven’t *made* the time to prepare as I normally do. This looks like a simplistic, beautiful way to prepare our hearts during Advent! Very creative! I have “signed” up twice, but haven’t received an email. Can you email me & let me know maybe what the problem is? Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your creativity with others!

I am not very creative, but have very creative grandkids & I think they would love to do something like this! Email me at the email address I gave you. And if you aren’t still offering this, thank you so very much for sharing it anyway! Great ideas!
